We celebrate 15th August as an independence day but do you why India got independence on 15th August 1947 at 12:00 AM.
British government was facing finical crisis after second world war. They were facing troubles in ruling their own country. in 1945 British election, Labour Party won and that served as building block for the Independence of India as they have mentioned to free India like many countries in their manifesto. In February, 1947, Lord Mountbatten was appointed as a last viceroy of India with a duty to free India properly. It was set to free India in 3rd June 1948 but it wasn’t easy as Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Jawaharlal Nehru had a dispute for the partition of country. Jinnah had demanded for separate country and as an outcome situations became worse and that’s why it was decided to free India 1947 instead of 1948.
It was Lord Mountbatten, last viceroy of India, who had decided 15 August to free India. It was the day when Japan had surrendered during second world war in 1945. At that time, Lord Mountbatten was commander of Allied Forces that’s why he selected 15th August for freedom of India.
Now, all was set to free country on 15th August 1947 but according to India Jyotish Shashtr it was an unlucky day. So, they have decided to free India on 12:AM because according to English Calendar it was 15th August but according to Hindu calendar, 15 August wasn’t start as Hindu day start after sunrises. Nehruji was advised to give his speech in Abhijit Muhurat between 11:51 PM to 12:39 AM.
Now, on the 15th August 1947, 32 crore Indian had witnessed freedom of country. There was no National anthem at the time of freedom. Ravindranath Tagore had already written “Jan Gan Man” in 1911 but in 1950, it was declared as Independence.
On the Independence day, Prime Minister of India flags on Lal Killa but in 1947, Nehru had flagged on 16th August. With the help of amendment in constitution, Portugal has declared Goa as it’s state by on 19th December 1961, Indian force had marched on Goa and from then Goa is one of states of India.
At the time of freedom, 1 rupee was equal to 1 dollar and the price of gold was Rs, 88.62/10 GM. Pincode was also approved from 15th August 1972. Pincode is a 6 digits’ number. From the 15th August 1982, India had started color broadcast by the speech of Indira Gandhi.
India is not only country who had its independence day on 15th August. South Korea had also got its freedom on 15th August 1945 from Japan, Bahrain on 15th August 1971 from Britain and Kango on 15th August 1960 from France.
First cabinet with 13 ministers from five different religions with one lady minister had also taken oath on 15th August 1947.
Mahatma Gandhi hadn’t participated in the celebration of freedom as he was in Noakhali of Bengal where he was trying his best to end Hindu-Muslim riots.
